LG MVEL2137D over-the-range microwave repair

LG lists the MVEL2137D as an over-the-range microwave with 2.1 cu ft capacity. It is the roomiest of the three over-the-range units on this site, which helps when large dishes need to turn, and which also means a bigger turntable that can catch on its track.

Turntable and noise

A grinding or thumping sound under the glass plate often comes from a dirty roller ring or a misaligned coupler. Lift out the plate, clear crumbs from the floor, and set the ring and plate back flat. The turntable guide covers the detail. Noise that continues with an empty cavity points to the drive motor or the cooling fan.

Sparks

Arcing is usually caused by metal trim on a dish, foil, or food residue on the cavity wall. If it continues with a clean cup of water, stop using the oven. Switch off at the breaker if a burning smell appears.

Other signs

• Display flickers when the stove hood light is on.
• Panel beeps without starting.
• The unit works only after repeated presses.

Installation notes

An over-the-range model draws power from a plug in the cabinet above, and the weight hangs from a mounting plate. We check the plug seating, the mounting and the vent path as part of diagnosis. Kitchens in older San Francisco flats sometimes have a low or shallow cabinet above, so tell us if space is tight.

Choosing when to call

Call quickly when you see repeated arcing, hear a loud buzz, notice a warm smell or find the power cord damaged. You can wait a short time for a worn light bulb or a sticky button, but please stop using the unit for any heat-related fault.

Keep the manual or a photo of the label at hand; the label often sits near the door opening.

Sound and smell clues

A faint hot-dust smell the first time you use a microwave after months is common. A sharp plastic or electrical smell is not. If you notice it, unplug the unit and wait for us. Take note of whether the smell came with a sound; the combination narrows the cause.
