LG Induction Cooktop Shuts Off by Itself: Causes and Checks
An induction cooktop that cuts power mid-recipe is often reacting to cookware, heat or a spill. Learn what the protections do and what to try before booking.
An induction surface heats the pan itself by using a magnetic field, so the glass stays cooler than a conventional electric element. That design brings plenty of automatic protections. The unit watches for the right cookware, for heat building up under the glass, for liquid on the touch controls and for a steady power supply. When any of those signals goes wrong, the surface stops heating, sometimes with a beep and sometimes with no warning at all.
Many San Francisco kitchens added induction during remodels, often on circuits that share space with other new appliances. That makes the cooktop sensitive to both cookware habits and to what else is drawing power at the same moment.
What the shutoff is trying to tell you
Pay attention to timing. A cooktop that cuts out within seconds of placing a pan is complaining about the pan. One that works for a while and then stops after a long boil is complaining about heat. One that quits when you wipe the glass or when steam rises is reacting to moisture on the controls. One that stops when the dishwasher or oven starts may be reacting to the supply. The pattern tells you more than the shutoff itself.
Frequent causes
- Unsuitable cookware. Pans that are not magnetic, or are too small or warped, are not detected, so the zone shuts off.
- A hot underside. Heavy use at high settings or restricted airflow below the glass can trigger the thermal protection.
- Liquid or metal on the touch pads. A boil-over or a spoon resting on the controls makes the cooktop read a stuck key.
- Cooling fan trouble. The fan under the unit moves heat away, and a clogged intake or weak fan leads to early shutoffs.
- Supply that sags. A shared or tired circuit can drop below what the cooktop expects.
- A failing sensor or power board. When everything external is clean, internal parts are the next suspects.
Messages that match
The cooktop codes below cover these cases. LG cooktop code 4 means metal objects or water have been in contact with the touch pads for a prolonged time. LG cooktop code 6 signals low voltage. Codes LG cooktop code 1, 2 and 3 are thermistor errors. LG cooktop code 5 means an error was found with the display. If you see one of these, record it before you power cycle anything.
Checks from above the glass
- Let the cooktop cool, then wipe the whole surface and the control area with a soft damp cloth. Dry it fully.
- Remove any utensils, towels or pot lids from the touch area.
- Test with a pan that clings to a magnet and sits flat. Center it on the zone and match it to the zone size.
- Look for airflow. Cabinets, trays or stored items directly beneath the cooktop can crowd the cooling intake, and a hood that blows warm air onto the glass does not help.
- Try one zone at a medium setting for a short time. If it holds, try a second zone, then both together, to see whether load triggers the shutoff.
- Turn off the breaker for the cooktop, wait briefly, and turn it back on once. Note whether the behavior changes.
Beyond that, the work is for a technician. The area below the glass holds high-voltage electronics and a fan, and no owner check justifies lifting the unit.
Habits that make shutoffs more likely
Some routines push an induction surface toward its limits. Boiling a large stockpot at full power for a long stretch, using a thin pan that overheats, or dragging pans across the glass can all bring on protections. Placing a cutting board over an unused zone while another one is on restricts the airflow that keeps the electronics cool. A quick change of habit, such as lowering the power once a pot reaches a boil and keeping the surface clear, often reduces shutoffs without any repair at all.
It also helps to note which zone stops first. A shutoff that always begins on the largest zone points toward load or heat, while one that jumps between zones points toward the controls or the supply. A short video taken with your phone, showing the display at the moment of the shutoff, gives a technician more than a long description.
Avoid these shortcuts
- Do not run the cooktop at full power for long periods to see if it quits again.
- Do not cover the glass with foil or a cutting board while it is on.
- Do not pour water on a hot surface to cool it quickly.
- Do not tape buttons or hold a key down to force a zone to run.
When to book
Book when shutoffs happen with several different pans, when a code returns after cleaning, when you hear no fan, when the glass is cracked or chipped, or when a burning smell appears. A cracked surface should not be used. We diagnose before any repair, send a written estimate, and wait for your approval.
Tell us whether your cooktop is electric radiant or induction, since both are common. Look through the LG Cooktops guide, and read the LG cooktop repair service page for how visits run. Model labels are usually on the underside edge, which means the paperwork or a photo from the installation is often easier than lifting the unit. Our electric examples include the LG LCE3010SBE repair page. If the touch controls act up as well, our post about LG cooktop touch controls not responding may help.
Frequently asked questions
A boil-over can put liquid across the touch pads, and a long boil can warm the area underneath. Either one can trip a protection. Wipe the glass and try a smaller flame setting.
You need cookware that a magnet clings to, with a flat base. Pans that skip across the glass or do not match the zone often cause the cooktop to stop.
A hard-wired cooktop is not on a plug you can swap. If power seems to sag when other appliances start, the circuit is worth having checked by an electrician.
Often yes, for a while, to carry heat away. A silent fan after hard use is something to report.
Many faults sit in a sensor, fan or board that can be diagnosed separately. We explain the findings in a written estimate before any work starts.
