LG Oven Takes Too Long to Preheat: What to Check
An LG oven that crawls toward its set temperature may have a worn element, an unhappy sensor or a baking habit that is quietly getting in the way.
When an LG oven takes much longer than before to warm up, most households first blame the thermostat setting. The real reasons usually fall into three groups: the heat source is weaker than it should be, the oven is losing heat as fast as it makes it, or the sensor that reports the temperature is misreporting. Each leaves a slightly different fingerprint, and noticing it saves a technician time.
In older San Francisco kitchens the oven is often a freestanding range or a slide-in unit on a circuit that has seen decades of use. Newer wall ovens in remodeled homes come with convection fans and electronic controls, which add more things that can slow a preheat while the basic element still glows.
Start with how the slowness feels
Describe the pattern before you troubleshoot it. Does the oven never reach the set temperature, or does it get there eventually? Does the bake element glow bright orange, only part of it, or not at all? Does the problem appear with every mode or only with convection? Does food finish later than the recipe says? Those answers point somewhere. A dim or partly lit element suggests the element itself. A normal glow with stubborn slowness suggests heat leaving through the door. Slowness in convection mode only suggests the fan or its wiring.
Likely causes
- A weakening bake element. Electric elements age. A section that no longer glows delivers less heat and stretches the preheat.
- A gas ignition that is slow to light. On gas ranges the igniter can take longer to open the valve as it ages, and that delays everything.
- A door gasket that no longer seals. Heat escaping around a flattened or torn gasket forces the oven to work harder to catch up.
- A temperature sensor that reads wrongly. The oven believes the cavity is warmer or cooler than it is and adjusts incorrectly.
- Crowded racks and foil. Pans, stones and foil lining the floor block airflow and absorb heat.
- A convection fan that is not turning freely. In convection modes, a stalled fan leaves hot and cold zones that slow the reading.
- Supply voltage problems. A weak supply to the range can slow heating across the board.
Fault codes that relate
The oven may show a code when a sensor or element misbehaves. The ones in our verified list that fit this symptom are LG range F9, where the upper oven is not heating properly, LG range F6, an upper oven heating error, and LG range F1, an upper oven thermistor error. A convection fan problem shows up as LG range F17. Write the code down with the mode you were using, because a technician can read a pattern from it.
Owner checks, in order
- Empty the oven. Remove pans, stones, foil on the floor and anything resting against the back wall.
- Turn on the light and a basic bake mode. Look through the window to see whether the element glows evenly along its length.
- Close the door and run your hand along the outside seam, near, not into, the oven, to feel whether warm air escapes at one spot.
- Look at the gasket. A flattened or frayed edge matters.
- Check that the range is firmly plugged in and that the breaker for the kitchen circuit has not partly tripped. On a gas model, confirm the gas valve behind the range is in its normal open position.
- Try the oven at a higher setting than you need and see whether the response changes. If it behaves the same way in every mode, write that down.
If you smell gas at any point, leave the home, avoid switches, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If you see sparks or smell burning, turn off the breaker.
Why it matters in a city kitchen
Older flats often share a single kitchen circuit among the range, the refrigerator and a few outlets, and that load can leave an oven short of what it needs. Tall buildings with long runs of wiring add to the effect. If your preheat slows only when other appliances are running, mention that to us, because it shifts attention from the oven toward the supply. Likewise, a remodel that moved the range a few inches may have changed how well the door seal meets the surrounding cabinets and trims.
Please do not
- Do not remove panels or touch the element terminals.
- Do not cover the oven floor with foil to catch drips while heating.
- Do not use the self-clean cycle as a test. It places heavy demands on the door lock, sensors and fan.
- Do not guess at gas parts. Gas fittings and igniters are a technician’s job.
Next step
Book a visit when the empty oven still takes noticeably longer than before, when part of the element stays dark, when a code appears, or when baking results have clearly shifted. We diagnose before any repair, write up an estimate and begin only after you approve it. Our LG range and oven repair service covers gas, electric and induction ranges and wall ovens, and the LG Ranges and Ovens guide shows how to find your model label, usually on the door frame or the edge of a drawer. A good starting model page is the LG LSGL5831F repair page for the slide-in gas range, or the LG LSEL6335LE repair page for an electric range.
Frequently asked questions
Not in itself. It is a performance problem. The danger comes from guessing at internal parts, so stick with the outside checks and let a technician handle anything beyond them.
Elements, igniters and gaskets all wear, so age is a legitimate cause. That still deserves a diagnosis, because a worn part may fail altogether at an inconvenient moment.
The control trusts its sensor. If the sensor misreports, the oven announces readiness early. Food that cooks slower than the clock suggests is a clue the sensor needs a look.
Not necessarily. Compare bake with convection and broil. If only one mode is slow, that narrows the list of parts a technician needs to test.
The model label, whether the element glows evenly, any code on the display, and a note about when the slowness began. Photos of the label and the glowing element are especially useful.
