A fan that no longer runs normally triggers rF. Its job is to move cold air around the refrigerator side, so once it is blocked the compressor works overtime, the interior warms and performance slips. The cabinet has a built-in sensor that catches a blocked fan.
Standard LG refrigerators
LG’s list describes an abnormal fan motor, possibly from frost. The manual defrost is as follows.
- Disconnect power, then clear out all food and the contents of the ice bin.
- Keep the doors wide open for at least 8 hours as the frost melts.
- Set towels inside and around the cabinet to soak up the water.
- Dry the refrigerator and freezer sections of leftover moisture.
- Reconnect and give it 24 to 48 hours to settle into normal operation.
Afterwards confirm that the interior vents are open, the cabinet and doors are level, and both doors seal fully.
Kimchi refrigerators (Er rF, E rF)
Here the blocked fan sits in the right side of the upper compartment. A door left partly open is the manual’s usual explanation, since outside air then enters and frost follows. Food goes to a cooler, towels go on the floor, the plug comes out and all doors open for 24 hours or more. Dry everything, reconnect and read the display. Avoid hair dryers.

San Francisco LG refrigerator repair for rF
Call (415) 223-7887 if rF returns following a complete defrost, whether you live in San Francisco or elsewhere around the Bay. Say whether your unit is standard or kimchi and how long it thawed. See LG refrigerator repair.
Model compatibility: LG reuses codes across series and model years, so rF may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
