UF turns up on LG kimchi refrigerators, also as Er UF or E UF, when ice or frost is holding the cooling fan of the middle or lower compartment. Until the ice is gone, that fan cannot turn.
The usual trigger
The manual points at a door that was not shut completely. Air from outside enters the compartment, and frost forms around the fan motor.
Manual thaw
Store the food in another refrigerator or a cooler and put dry towels around the base. Pull the plug, open all the doors fully and wait at least 24 hours, which means about a day in summer and up to three days in winter. Towel-dry the inside and floor, make sure no moisture is left, reconnect, and check whether UF has cleared.
Avoid melting the ice with a hair dryer. Heat can deform plastic and adds a fire risk. Water may also run into other compartments along the cold air passages.
Related codes
The upper compartment has its own fan codes: LF on the left and rF on the right.
Kimchi refrigerator repair, San Francisco
When UF returns after a thaw, call (415) 223-7887; we take calls from San Francisco and across the Bay. Share the model number and the date of the last defrost. The LG refrigerator repair page has the details.
Model compatibility: LG reuses codes across series and model years, so UF may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
